Scene from episode 13 of volume 6

RWBY has always been a series that I've had a love hate relationship with.

When it first premiered I loved the concept and was hooked on it. However, I start noticing problems with it like how in the first few seasons it seemed like everyone was overpowered. While I wouldn't say I necessarily hated the series at any point, it was difficult to still say this was a good series with so many problems. I decided though that Volume 6 may be the season I was waiting for, and would show how great this series could be. So was Volume 6 a success, or did it make me lose faith in this series?

Plot

Volume 6 starts off with the team boarding a train to head to Argus with the relic. On the way there the train is attacked by grimm, forcing the group to split. This leads to Team RWBY, Oscar, Qrow, and a mysterious old woman to find a way to Argus so they can get to Atlas.

My reaction

As I said before, I wasn't sure if Volume 6 would be great. Luckily, Volume 6 was great and is my favorite in the whole series. While I will jump into more detail later in the article, There were many moments I loved from the Volume that made me remember why I loved this series in the first place. It made me remember that while it does have problems, there's still a great story that should be told. Since I'm new to reviewing series, I want to explain that this is just my overall opinion on it. I do plan on going into more detail, but there's a chance I may bring up major spoilers from this volume either on purpose or by accident. So if you'd prefer to read my thoughts on the series in detail, than please continue. However, if you'd like to avoid spoilers, than I suggest stopping now.

A shocking reveal

During the first episode of the volume, it's revealed that the relic is a lamp containing Jin. Jin is a being that holds knowledge over everything, but will only answer 3 questions within a century. When it becomes clear that Ozpin isn't telling them the whole truth, they summon Jin to ask what he's hiding. There we see the true story of how Ozpin is really hundreds of years old, was in love with Salem, and moves on to a new host once he dies because he needs to stop Salem to move on to the afterlife.

It was shocking to see this reveal, and even more shocking that we got this in the third episode. While most of us were theorizing what the truth was with Ozpin, I didn't hear anything close to this. This was a real shock to hear, and was a great backstory to explain how Ozpin ended up in this situation. It also shows that While Salem was selfish to ask gods to bring the man she loved back to life, it's something most of us can relate to on a personal level. Speaking of villains we can relate to...

The Showdown we were waiting for

While non of us knew how it would happen, we were expecting Adam to show up and screw things up for Team RWBY. In the final few episodes, we saw him attack Blake while she was trying to help her team escape. While Adam hasn't exactly been the most exciting character in the series, he is one of the most intimidating villains. We've seen what he has personally done to people like Blake and Yang, and now he's obsessive with getting what he wants. Not only was him fighting Blake and Yang my favorite fight of the volume, it led to us finally seeing what was under his mask. What was under it was what appears to be a prison number stamped over his eye.

One of my biggest complaints about RWBY was we never seen the faunus treated badly. When one of your main characters talks about how they're unfairly treated, you need to show that really happening. While I doubt Blake would lie about something like that, it doesn't really give us the idea that they are being treated unfairly after all. I have heard counters to my point like "it would be hard to watch if they did address that" but that's the point. If you're going to address a theme like racism, then you need to be ready to show racism for what it really is. While Adam's face reveal does he seem small, it does open the door to what made Adam become the heartless person we see today.

While we don't know where exactly Adam got that stamp, many have suggested that maybe it's from the Schnee Dust Company. After all Blake did complain to Weiss about the company treating her people badly, so maybe they do secretly engage in slavery or still do behind closed doors. I do hope volume 7 will expand more on this since it appears Adam did die in his fight with Blake and Yang. I do have a feeling we might see more of his story in some way, but I personally believe that he is gone after that fight.

Final Thoughts

If you were like me and wondering if you should still watch RWBY, then I can honestly say it's worth staying around. It will finally give you answers to questions you've been waiting for, while also adding more to keep you interested in what will happen next.
